Anyone with any football experience is aware that quality goalkeepers are, at best, volatile and, at worst, complete wankers. So, imagine our surprise when our new, flowing locked, keeper turned out to be a genuinely tranquil and amiable individual.
We were treated to very fine goalkeeping, reminiscent of Tony Meola, Kasey Keller, Brad Friedel and, of course, Ted. Even after Delilah had had her way he continued to produce stunning saves, assist in the odd goal and gave a sense of security at the back which permeated throughout the team. The record speaks for itself, Newley, along with Jnr only let in one goal in the last two Taiwan cups!
Newley has always been ready to challenge goalkeeping convention, not only with his easy going attitude towards his defenders, but also with development of his art. This culminated in his, unprecedented, punch-to-catch move recently displayed at the Taiwan Winter Cup.
Unfortunately, Newley will be leaving us soon.
